The “dry and oxygen poor conditions” of a landfill prevent the decomposition of the waste that it houses. These conditions prevent groundwater pollution, the release of methane gas during decomposition, and the contamination of surrounding soil*.
So, why share this information? The answer is threefold: One, knowledge is power. Two, consider that the waste you send to a landfill will lay there, perhaps whole, for years, decades, centuries. Three, compostable products will not break down in the same way if taken to a landfill. Just remember to put those compostable materials in the compost bin!
